Yeast Infection

A yeast infection, medically termed candidiasis, is an infection caused by various Candida fungi, predominantly by Candida albicans. These microorganisms are normally present in small amounts in the human body, including the mouth, digestive tract, and on the skin. However, when an imbalance occurs, such as a compromised immune system, antibiotic use, or changes in the vaginal environment, these yeasts can multiply excessively, leading to an infection. Typical symptoms include itching, redness, and discomfort, with potential discharge in cases of vaginal yeast infections. Oral thrush presents with creamy white lesions, usually on the tongue or inner cheeks.

Diagnosis of a yeast infection is typically based on the presenting symptoms and may be confirmed by microscopy or culturing of a sample from the affected site. Treatment commonly involves antifungal medications, which can be administered topically, orally, or intravenously, depending on the severity and location of the infection. It is important to address the underlying conditions that may contribute to yeast overgrowth to prevent recurrent infections. While generally not serious, if left untreated, some yeast infections can become severe and spread to other parts of the body, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems.
