Dry Hair

Dry hair is a condition where the hair lacks the moisture and oil necessary to maintain its texture and sheen, resulting in a brittle, dull appearance. Normally, healthy hair has an outer layer containing natural oils that protect the inner layers, keep the hair hydrated, and give it a smooth, shiny look. When hair becomes dry, this outer protective layer breaks down, leading to a coarse and lackluster appearance. Hair dryness can be caused by a variety of factors, including over-washing, excessive use of heat styling tools, chemical hair treatments, environmental exposure, and inadequate hair care routines.

From a medical standpoint, dry hair might also be indicative of underlying health issues such as hypothyroidism or malnutrition, which can affect the hair's ability to retain moisture. Certain medications may also contribute to the problem. Dry hair is more prone to damage and breakage, potentially leading to hair thinning or hair loss if not properly managed. To alleviate dryness, medical professionals often recommend the use of specific shampoos and conditioners formulated for dry hair, deep conditioning treatments, and protecting the hair from harsh conditions while also promoting healthier hair care practices.
